SCIENTIFIC EXPERTISE YOU CAN TRUST
I hold a Ph.D. in Botany from the University of California, Riverside, and have worked in field, greenhouse, and laboratory settings since 1996. I have authored more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific articles on my own research. I know how publishing in science works, and I can help you navigate the system.
EDITORIAL AND CONTENT REVIEW EXPERIENCE
As a freelance content reviewer, editor, and writer for educational publishers, I ensure scientific accuracy of print and online teaching materials in middle and high school biology and physical science. I am familiar with Next Generation Science Standards and individual state standards, and adhere to these standards in developing content and assessments.
I am currently writing for the News and Public Affairs office of the University of Illinois' College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences, producing news releases that translate complex science concepts for public consumption. The researchers I work with appreciate my science literacy and ability to distill their message into digestible stories. I enjoy the challenge of finding the "hook" in the research that will interest the public.
As a technical editor at the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC), I provided substantive/content editing and suggestions for rewriting, copy editing, research and fact-checking, proofreading, and production editing for grant proposals, journal articles, technical reports, and other publications. Topics ranged from plastics pyrolysis to incorporating technology into the classroom. I also blogged for ISTC on occasion.
I work in a respectful and professional manner with all of the authors whose work I edit, and am comfortable working with authors whose native language is not English.
PEDAGOGICAL PERSPECTIVE
I developed and delivered lectures, assessments, laboratory activities, and classroom materials for majors and non-majors biology students at Dominican University of California, the University of California, Riverside, and Riverside Community College. This firsthand experience gave me a strong appreciation for the diversity of student abilities and backgrounds that educators must accommodate, and led me to understand the kinds of topics and activities that excite students and -- invariably -- those that don't. Educators and educational publishers can trust me to keep a student-centered perspective.
As a service to my local community, I work with elementary school teachers to copy edit classroom materials, letters to parents, and other professional communications. I routinely edit the blog of a local elementary school teacher with a passion for STEM disciplines.
